Giant MY13 (2013) Recreational Range Release.

It’s been a long time coming, but certainly worth the wait! Last week Giant released the details of their Recreational Range (sub $1500 bikes) for the 2013 season. And it gets better as many of the models are already in stock with some on our shop floors.

Since the devastating March 2011 tsunami in Japan there has been increased pressure on factories to either rebuild and or get production running again for the world wide demands from consumers’. The effects of these supply shortages have arisen mainly from Shimano the biggest bicycle component manufacturer which resulted in stock shortages on some of our most popular Giant models since January 2012. In particular the then Trail Glide (now Sedona) models, Youth BMX’s and MTB’s.

The new 2013 range is certainly an impressive looking range across all categories. Great new colours, models and frame designs along with new 2013 component specs make this one of the better ranges we have seen to date. Key updates and changes on models are noted below.

Giant 2013 XtC Jr 1 20 Black Red.html Giant’s Youth range models for this season remain un-touched, with the exception of two name changes. The girl’s 20” BMX model from 2012 called the Bella has been renamed the Holly 20” and now comes in 2 colour options. In the Youth MTB range the XtC Street models get a name change to the Veer, and still feature the ever popular option of a Shimano Nexus internal rear hub for derailleur-less hassle free gear operation.  All the other models in the Youth line up - the Animator, Holly, and XtC/Areva are available in fresh new colours with new season’s upgrades.

Giant 2013 Boulder 29er 1 Silver/White/Red The Boulder Recreational MTB range gets the introduction of the ever popular 29er wheel in 2 versions, the Boulder 1 29er and Boulder 0 29er. Starting at just $729, the Boulder 1 29er is the first 29er model in the line up, boasting an ALUXX FluidFormed™ Alloy frame, Shimano Alivio 24 speed components, Tektro Novela disc brakes and a Suntour XCT suspension fork. This is sure to be a winner with the ever increasing demand for 29er wheels. There is still plenty of options in 26” wheel size with the Boulder 1, 2, 3, 4 in both men’s and women’s options. The 2013 Boulder 4 gets a Suntour suspension fork added for 2013 now retailing at $499 – a great entry level Off-Road MTB.

Giant 2013 Talon 29er 1 Womens White/Blue/Silver All Talon MTB models have also made the switch to 29er wheel, in 2 models for 2013 – the Talon 1 29er and Talon 0 29er in both men’s and women’s options. The Talon 1 Women’s 29er is the first women’s specific 29er in the line up at just $1149. This comes packed full of components, like a ALUXX SL FluidFormed™ Alloy frame, Shimano Deore 27 speed, Tektro HDC300 Hydraulic disc brakes, and a Suntour XCT MLO suspension fork.

Giant 2013 Sedona DX Womens Light Blue/Turquoise The biggest selling Giant model in NZ - the Trail Glide, gets a new name from 2013 called the Sedona. Some of you may remember this as this model was called the Sedona back 2-3 years ago. There are again 2 versions of the new Sedona, the Sedona and Sedona DX both in men’s and women’s options starting at $599. The new 2013 Sedona boasts a brand new stylish frame design for the women’s option; this allows better clearance and ease of getting on and off the bike. This is sure to be a winner again, and will no doubt be seen all over tracks around the South Island like the popular Rail Trails.

Giant 2013 Via 1 Womens Grey/Pink/Purple The Giant Via is back for 2013, featuring a hassle free single cog gearing option, or 8 speed gearing for those of you wanting to pick up the pace a bit. Both the Via 1 and Via 2 models come complete with low steel women’s frame, 700c wheels for street riding, fenders and a front basket on the Via 1 only.

The Suede has been discontinued from the 2013 line up which is of some disappointment, however if you have been waiting for new season’s stock of these then don’t panic. With the new frame design on the Sedona model’s there is very little difference between these models now. We suggest you come in and take the new Sedona for a test run to see for yourself.

Giant 2013 Defy 1 White/Black/Red Great new colours feature in the Defy and Avail road bikes for 2013, starting from just $1299 for the Defy 3 (men’s) and Avail 3 (women’s). The 2012 model of the Defy 1 was given an outstanding review from bikeradar of 4.5 out of 5 stars, "Superbly responsive yet fluid ride backed up with an excellent spec for the money". The 2013 Defy 1 is packed full of the same features for this season, now retailing for just $1799, a saving of $100 over 2012.

Other models to note in the line up is the new Cypress DX and Cypress LX models which boast a new frame for 2013, new colours in the ever popular commuter the Seek and new models of the women’s Roam called the Rove.

We are expecting details of the 2013 Performance Range on August 15th, enquires have been flowing in steadily for these, in particular for the new Trance 29er and Anthem X 29er models. We are just as excited about seeing these models ourselves!
